A fun and productive way to build vocabulary

For those of you who haven’t seen this website, Free Rice, it’s a great way to build on some uncommon vocabulary words in a fun, game-like setting, as well as providing a free donation of rice per correct vocabulary word chosen. Maybe I’m a little slow, as this came out sometime last year I believe, but I just stumbled across it and thought I’d pass the link on.

Taken from the free rice website:

FreeRice is a sister site of the world poverty site, Poverty.com.

FreeRice has two goals:

Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site.

Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or a street child in a poor country, improving your vocabulary can improve your life. It is a great investment in yourself.

Perhaps even greater is the investment your donated rice makes in hungry human beings, enabling them to function and be productive. Somewhere in the world, a person is eating rice that you helped provide. Thank you.

Basically, the way it works is that you’re given a vocab word, and you have four choices to choose from to determine the meaning. If you get it right, an amount of rice is automatically donated on behalf of the site’s sponsors. Granted, it’s only a few grains for each word answered correctly, but hell, it beats sitting with an eight pound dictionary in your lap…at least this way someone else is getting something out of it besides just vocab exercises.

Now for the disclaimer: Of course, Leucrota Press does not endorse nor receive any kickback benefits, endorsements, income, etc. for providing this link. It is for your personal viewing pleasure that it has been listed. There, so back off you blood-sucking….
